Job Description:
We design, curate, build, and install custom elements:
large-scale art, branding, environmental graphics, wayfinding,
experience moments, exhibits, and public activation. We work
directly with clients, architects, and interior designers to bring
to life the art and design that overlays the traditional
architecture scope. We are a fast-growing design and fabrication
studio with many exciting, unusual projects. We are passionate
about integrating art, storytelling, and brand expression into the
built environment. Consistency, thoroughness, passion, and
craftsmanship are the fundamentals on which we have built SPMD.
POSITION SUMMARY As a Design Director, you will be responsible for
multiple projects, client relationships, and the development of
internal processes. You will bring creativity and energy to every
project and task, with a good understanding of design,
architecture, art, and fabrication. You will be highly
collaborative, self-driven, organized, cooperative, and flexible.
Your passion and thoughtful design approach will help support and
shape the culture of the on-site design office, and your experience
and forward thinking will help shape the culture of SPMD's business
development. Position Responsibilities as a Design Director - 1.
Projects
- Ideate fun conceptual ideas and develop and deliver them using
our collaborative approach and process.
- Plan, manage, and complete multiple design projects at various
stages of development and delegate tasks accordingly.
- Work as part of a larger design team, developing and
maintaining relationships and keeping clear communication
throughout the project:
- with the Creative Director, Director of Project Management, and
Executive Leadership
- with the client, architects, engineers, and other external
project partners
- with Design Engineering, Fabrication, and Project Management
departments to oversee design intent through fabrication.
- with junior staff in developing narratives, executing design
assets, and documents
- Maintain awareness of project goals and understand design
impact on cost, production, and other variables.
- Prepare graphic presentations for client review and present
work articulately and passionately. 2. Internal processes
- Work with design and executive leadership on business
development processes, relationships, proposals, and planning.
- A critical role for this in-house design director will be
internal processes through design, fabrication, and installation.
You will need to learn + integrate into our current processes, then
develop and execute a consistent and collaborative improved process
with the design engineering and fabrication departments. 3.
Management
- Oversee design staff on a project basis.
- A second critical role for this position will be mentoring and
guiding the culture of the in-house design team. You will oversee
and mentor design staff regularly, including weekly check-ins,
one-on-ones, annual reviews, hiring, and office support.
- Research and integrate art, experience design, new materials,
technologies, and building methods into design ideas Skills and
expectations
- Ability to understand architectural drawing sets and
fabrication shop drawings
- Ability to quickly communicate concept ideas through sketches,
diagrams, mood boards, and collage
- Ability to pivot from conceptualizing narratives to managing
junior designers
- Understanding of fabrication techniques, materials, and
processes
- Curiosity to learn more and push boundaries of artistic
expression and fabrication
- Highly collaborative attitude and experience working with other
designers, architects, project managers, graphic designers,
engineers, fabricators, lighting designers, and clients
- Ability to think with your hands; passion for designing and
building things. This includes knowledge of the design process,
ergonomics, Universal Design, user interface, materials,
prototyping, and construction processes.
- A bonus would be knowledge of digital experiential/interactive
design in the physical environment. TRACKING
- Design hours to be tracked weekly
- Oversee project team staff in tracking hours and ensure all
project hours are accounted for weekly. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Become proficient in office standard programs, such as Adobe
Creative Suite, Asana, and G-Suite.
- Consult with management on coursework or professional
development opportunities.
- Be proactive and self-disciplined, and seek out solutions to
present to management.
